High performance: Car safety gets a boost with LED lights

At night it can be difficult to see where you’re going, as well as how you’re getting there. Even though car light technology has advanced over the years, recent improvements still can’t quite make up for the complete darkness that is an unlit street – which is why one entrepreneur decided to take matters into his own hands.

His idea? The addition of LED lights on doors and cars’ undercarriages to make the vehicles much more visible to other drivers and pedestrians.

LED lighting could also help to increase visibility when drivers are turning or changing lanes, and make the signals much easier to decipher by other drivers. Bright blinking lights and greater visibility might make drivers’ intentions far more clear. Because the lights are located close to the ground, it would also help to illuminate the road, instead of blinding or flashing other drivers. (The new lights are low enough that they don’t appear in mirrors or drivers’ direct line of sight.)

Though it’s still in the beginning stages, inventor Michael Haas is hoping to sell the idea to carmakers, creating a version that is standard on all new vehicles. He’s hoping to add a layer of safety that current vehicle lights just can’t achieve.
