The worst cities for parking your car

Many cars parked in store or business parking lot filling all the spaces

When it comes to everyday driving, oftentimes parking can be just as important as the driving itself. After all, a parking lot, stall or curb is where you leave your car. Where you choose – or are permitted – to park can mean the difference between safety and costly catastrophe. (Think inclement weather, brake malfunction, or theft and/or vandalism – not to mention the price of parking meters or monthly garage rates.)

Of course, location matters. And we’re not just talking about your local choices: Out of all the cities across the U.S., some are more car park lot-friendly than others. Research has been done that proves what we all intuitively know. Larger, more crowded cities are the worst place to try and park you car. Which cities topped the ‘worst’ list? San Francisco, Cal., Chicago (cited as the worst of all), New York City, Washington, D.C., and Honolulu, Hawaii. Also on the list is Oakland, California, with a theft rate of 124 percent of the national average. In contrast, Boise, Idaho sits at the lowest car theft rate, with -84 percent of the national average.
